iPhone Launch in St. Louis Is Fast and Smooth

ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), June 30, 2007 –
Apple's anticipated iPhone launch drew an enormous level of attention across the country. The iPhone is an iTunes-compatible handheld device that combines a cellular phone, a music and video player, a digital camera and an Internet communications device into one product. The price tag on the respective 4GB and 8GB models ranges also created a buzz. When the product was first announced by Apple CEO Steve Jobs at Macworld on January 9, iPhone-related search activity jumped to more than 1.1 million searches during the week ending January 14, according to a study released by comScore, a leader in measuring the digital world. From February through May, the number of weekly searches ranged between 80,000 and 200,000, which still represented very high levels of search activity for an individual product.

By comparison, even during the post-announcement period the number of iPhone-related searches was comparable with the number of searches for Motorola's "Razr," a well-established and popular cell phone already available to consumers."The iPhone launch is likely to be one of the biggest product launches in history, and the activity we're seeing online clearly reflects widespread consumer interest," said James Lamberti, senior vice president of search solutions at comScore.

"This study also helps underscore the significant role search plays in both online and offline retail, since many of those researching the product online will be lining up at the bricks-and-mortar retailers to purchase their new iPhones.Added Mr. Lamberti, "In a previous study conducted by comScore, we found that product-related searches in the consumer electronics category can result in conversion rates as high as 25 percent within 90 days of the search -- when one examines buying that occurs across all channels. Achieving such a high conversion rate may ultimately prove difficult with a new product, but if that assumption were to hold true it could yield as much as $1 billion in search-driven iPhone sales when factoring in the $500 to $600 price tag.

"The strategic launch, Friday, June 29, drew lines at every Apple store and designated AT&T outlets. Unlike on the east coast, where buyers began lining up early Monday morning in New York, and even the Mayor of Phillidelphia spend a day in line, the launch in St. Louis was hampered because the two Apple stores were inside the malls where buyers were not allowed to line up until the day of the launch. All 164 Apple retail stores were closed simultaneously at 2 p.m. in their respective time zones and reopened from 6 p.m. to midnight to sell what promises to be a new revolution in cell phones.College students, Joe Torres, Meramec, and Andrew Morrow, Lewis & Clark, stood 15 hours in line to be the first to buy the new iPhones at St. Louis Galleria. They also enjoyed bragging rights."It's how you spend your time," said Morrow. "It's a breakthrough in technology."The Keenan family arrived at 5:50 p.m. for the event. "We were the late comers," said Brent. "Some of these people brought chairs and have waited in line a long time."One father, while waiting with three of his kids, was overheard speaking with his wife via cell phone, "The line is moving fast at the Apple store and it shouldn't take more than a half hour.

"The Apple store at the Galleria is a mini store with a small display area. Buyers were greeted one by one by the staff, "Would you like to try the iPhone before you buy?."Once inside the store, many eagerly began trying all the functions, with responses including, "It's the ultimate iPod" and "Oh, I can make a phone call on it.""Apple retail stores were created for this moment -- to let customers touch and experience a revolutionary new product," said Ron Johnson, Apple's senior vice president of Retail. "With our legendary Genius Bar support, free workshops and our One to One personal training, we're here to help.

3G, WORLDWIDE

iPhone3G technology gives iPhone fast access to the Internet and email over cellular networks around the world. iPhone 3G also makes it possible to do more in more places: Surf the web, download email, get directions, and watch video — even while you’re on a call.

Go anywhere

iPhone 3G meets worldwide standards for cellular communications, so you can make calls and surf the web from practically anywhere on the planet. And if you’re in an area without a 3G network, iPhone connects you via GSM for calls and EDGE for data.

More wireless. Less space

iPhone 3G delivers UMTS, HSDPA, GSM, Wi-Fi, EDGE, GPS, and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR in one compact device — using only two antennas. Clever iPhone engineering integrates those antennas into a few unexpected places: the metal ring around the camera, the audio jack, the metal screen bezel, and the iPhone circuitry itself. And intelligent iPhone power management technology gives you up to 5 hours of talk time over 3G networks.2 That’s some of the best in the business.

Talk and browse. At the same time

iPhone already gives you mobile multitasking. But 3G technology lets you multitask in more places — without connecting via Wi-Fi. Since 3G networks enable simultaneous data and voice, you can talk on the phone while surfing the web, checking email, or using Maps. All from your 3G cellular network.

How it works

iPhone 3G uses a technology protocol called HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) to download data fast over UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) networks. Email attachments and web pages load twice as fast on 3G networks as on 2G EDGE networks.1 And since iPhone 3G seamlessly switches between EDGE, faster 3G, and even faster Wi-Fi, you always get the best speeds possible.

Colorware Now Offering iPhone Paint Jobs

With the iPhone selling as well as it is, we are betting there are plenty of opportunities for people to get theirs mixed up with that of someone elses. After all, do you really want to turn it on and verify that the wallpaper on any iPhone you happen to grab really is your bulldog in his pink tutu? This is why we are intrigued by ColorWare‘s latest addition to their custom paint services; that being for the iPhone. While it isn’t the cheapest thing in the world (but really - is anything involving the iPhone cheap?), we know from first-hand experience that ColorWare’s work is pretty darn impressive - just check out the paint job they did for our 3G iPod back in the day. To get a painted iPhone in your hands, you can take advantage of one of three options - you can pay them $149 USD and mail in your iPhone and they will do it up nice and send it back, or you can just purchase a brand new iPhone from them, which they will then paint and send to you. That runs $649 USD for a 4GB model, and $749 for an 8GB version

Thinner, More Styling

Larger capacities won?t equal more heft. In fact the iPhone will be slimmed down 2.5 millimeters, according to IntoMobile. The slim down makes the iPhone new casing as thick as the current iPod Touch.

The slimmer body of the iPhone will also accompany a more upscale look according IntroMobile. Without explaining how, IntroMobile says, the next iPhone will have a "less 'plasticy' feel."

A report from iPodObserver contradicts IntroMobile cla
iming the next iPhone will have more plastic. iPod Observer says Apple will replace the satin nickel finish on the iPhone's back with a glossy black plastic back.

Not only does the hardware reportedly get an update, but so do iPhone features, according to a variety of sources.

One addition found in the beta iPhone 2.0 firmware are business friendly features that support secure "push" email similar to BlackBerry, according to AppleInsider. AppleInsider reports that the next generation iPhone will support Microsoft's business e-mail server software Microsoft Exchange.

Some Sick iPods

Yes, I think the iPod is pretty cool, but we are talking about the more common use of the word “sick”.

Apple said yesterday that it had discovered that a some of its Video iPods shipped with a Windows virus on the player.
“Less than 1 percent” of the Video iPods sold after Sept. 12 were infected with the Windows RavMon.exe virus, Apple said.

“This known virus affects only Windows computers, and up to date anti-virus software which is included with most Windows computers should detect and remove it,” Apple said in a statement on it’s web site. “So far we have seen less than 25 reports concerning this problem. The iPod nano, iPod shuffle and Mac OS X are not affected, and all Video iPods now shipping are virus free. As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy …

Apple Adds 8GB iPod nano RED to Lineup

Apple has released a new 8GB model of the popular iPod nano RED Special Edition in response to the overwhelming demand of the 4GB iPod nano RED SE. The new version of the iPod nano RED has 8GB of storage and holds up to 2,000 songs
The new model features the same striking red aluminum case and features 24 hours of battery life, Apple’s innovative Click Wheel, redesigned earbud headphones, USB 2.0 cable, and completely skip-free playback. As with the other iPod RED model, Apple will contribute $10 from the sale of each player to the Global Fund to help fight HIV/AIDS in Africa.

USB Travel Dock For iPod Shuffle

iPod accessories abound these days, and once in a while you can find one that might actually be useful. I’m not saying that this is something you need, but with the iPod Shuffle being as small as it is, this simple little docking station keeps it from getting pushed around your desk.

This really small Shuffle dock has no cords, and just plugs directly into your USB port. It’s profile is narrow enough that it takes up no more room that a cord would, and is light enough even with the Shuffle in it that it is not going to put too much torque on your USB port.

The thing that you will want to watch out for with this is the position of your USB port. We are not sure how well the Shuffle stays in position in the dock, so if …

iTunes Unable to Keep Up Over Holiday

After some misinterpreted data on falling iTunes sales earlier this month, recent reports from CNN.com are saying that this iTunes sales continue to do quite the opposite.

According to reports, over the holiday season the iTunes store was receiving so much traffic that users were experiencing delays and at times where even unable to download music from the iTunes website. According to Hitwise, iTunes had received four times the amount of traffic during Christmas than it did at the same time the previous year.

“What you’re seeing is the tremendous success of the iPod,” said Michael Gartenberg, vice president and research director with JupiterResearch. “No doubt it was a very, very popular gift, and no matter how well you plan on the server side of the equation, there are always times when you get caught short.”
Although many people had reported having trouble …
